Gerald Graff is professor of English and education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and has been elected to serve as the President of the Modern Language Association in 2008.

Widely considered the standard history of the profession of literary studies, Professing Literature unearths the long-forgotten ideas and debates that created the literature department as we know it today. In a readable and often-amusing narrative, Gerald Graff shows that the heated conflicts of our recent culture wars echo—and often recycle—controversies over how literature should be taught that began more than a century ago. Updated with a new preface by the author that addresses many of the provocative arguments raised by its initial publication, Professing Literature remains an essential history of literary pedagogy and a critical classic.“Graff’s historyis a pathbreaking investigation showing how our institutions shape literary thought and proposing how they might be changed.”— The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism

Hirsch and Allan Bloom sharea nostalgia for a not very closely examined past in which things were better. "Both E. D. Gerald Graff's Professing Literature is extremely important, partly because it tells us a good deal about the realities of this supposedly better time.Graff's book is more consequential than Bloom's because it addresses the pedagogical questions and situates them in a fascinating narrative of how literature has actually been taught in this country for the past century and a half." - Robert Scholes, College English "Graff's historyis a pathbreaking investigation showing how our institutions shape literary thought and proposing how they might be changed." - The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism"

I've read parts of Blomberg, France, Calvin, and Henry. I would agree to a certain extent with anyone who thinks it unfortunate that some religious fundamentalists -- in their efforts to get creationist mythology (intelligent design) taught in public school science courses -- have co-opted Graff's phrase "teaching the controversies." But consider what violence religious fundamentalists of all faiths have resorted to when discussion stops. Sleep: Proven Tips to Increased Energy, Feeling Better and Defeating Insomnia by Kim Davis should prove an extremely helpful resource to anyone who suffers from insomnia, whether that suffering is occasional or chronic. The summary is extremely easy to read and understand. He is still a tadpole, and he is all alone. This book was very engaging for my students with ASD (K-1). In this rush, rush world we have evolved to, her story allows us to slow the pace for a while and enjoy the simpler pleasures of life. I work very hard trying to write insightful and thoughtful reviews for each item. I would recommend this book highly to students of Russia and the Soviet Union. At the very least, I wanted something FUN. I have seen these items in general for between $6 and $9 without any sales tax charged and when ordered with enough other items
